From Rural Roots to Cancer Survivor: The Lifesaving Power of Human Connection in Health Care
I have experienced the good, the bad, and the ugly in health care from multiple perspectives. Growing up in rural Kansas as the daughter of the only doctor in our community, I witnessed firsthand the challenges and triumphs of medical practice in underserved areas. My father’s dedication and the close-knit relationships he built with his patients shaped my understanding of the profound impact that quality human connection can have on health outcomes.
Later in life, I became a caregiver for my chronically ill husband, a journey that involved driving over 57,000 miles to access specialized medical care. This experience underscored the critical role that caregivers play and highlighted the disparities in health care access and the importance of supportive, empathetic medical professionals.
As a patient myself and a breast cancer survivor, I have seen the health care system from the most vulnerable position. Navigating my own treatment and recovery journey emphasized how essential it is for patients to feel heard, understood, and genuinely cared for by their doctors.
In all these roles, I have learned that the quality of human connection between doctors, caregivers, and patients is crucial in shaping health care expectations and outcomes. It’s these connections that can make all the difference in the world.
