The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don’t play together, the club won’t be worth a dime.

The Power of Effective Team Retreats
Sometimes I feel like Iām living in a house of cards that could come crashing down at any time. Unlike the pyramids that were built to stand the test of time. The winds blow a lot in Kansas. It seems like I get one situation taken care of and another card is blown away making the whole structure unstable.
Early Work Experiences: Retreats and Their Impact
In my earlier work life, there were a few times that I went on retreats. One was for strategic planning for the board of an organization. I donāt remember much about that except we got out of town and focused on our mission.
One was team building and consisted of nine holes of golf. I donāt golf and it probably would have been better to stay and work on my lesson plans. I was building a curriculum, had no idea how to do it, and they wouldnāt let me buy an accredited curriculum. It wasnāt a great situation, and I didnāt enjoy golfing. I felt like it was wasted time.
The other was for a tourism organization. There were facilitated activities to help with team building. We had activities to help us get to know ourselves and each other better. We worked on communication styles. There was strictly social time. And we had time to work on our mission. This was highly satisfying. It also gave me two days away from the office which at that point was something I needed.
The Importance of Understanding Filters
Sometimes we forget that everyone in a community has their own filters that they hear and see through. That noise gets in the way. When we understand more about ourselves and each other projects will run smoother. Increasing our satisfaction at work will improve our lives. It can help with personal relationships as well as work relationships.
Improved communications will help with customer service as well as work between co-workers. When you take the time to get to know each other and understand what drives their communication or decision making it makes understanding easier.
