Banner of horse's eyes

On Sunday morning I was awakened by a crash of thunder. That must have been really close I thought. I tried to go back to sleep since it was earlier than I was intending to get up. Normally this wouldnā€™t be a problem, sleeping is my superpower. This morning it wasnā€™t so I got up just in time for the downpour of rain. I waited for it to let up a bit before going out to feed the horses. It looked like it was going to rain off and on for the rest of the day.

Horse

Bugs A Special aka Sassy, my guardian.

Later when I went out to put the horses out to pasture Sassy was acting funny. She was holding back when she was normally the one to follow me to the gate. Today the other two went out and still she was up under the shed. Maybe she knows itā€™s going to rain more and wants to stay in. I knew she wouldnā€™t be happy if she wasnā€™t with the herd though. It didnā€™t feel like something major was wrong and she finally went out.

Early in the afternoon, I saw them right behind my house. Then there was more thunder and lightning. And another downpour. The horses had disappeared during this storm. I assumed they had gone into the trees for the protection they offered.

When I saw them a little later there were only four. Sassy wasnā€™t with them. This worried me a bit. Sometimes one of them will go off by themselves but I can usually see them and one of the other mares seemed a bit distraught. After watching them move further out to pasture and still not seeing Sassy I went to the barn to see if she had gone back to the corrals. She hadnā€™t. I was trying to figure out how I could go around the pasture to try to find her. I donā€™t have a side-by-side and I didnā€™t think my Jeep was a good option for driving in the muddy pasture. Which one of my neighbors should I call?

I got in the Jeep and headed toward the road as that was the way the horses were going. When I got outside the first gate I saw them ā€“ all five of them. Nothing seemed awry.

A few hours later when I went to get Ace and Patty every time Iā€™d approach Patty sheā€™d go pin her ears at Sassy. Sassy would move off with Patty in chase. Finally, I decided they were going to the corrals, and I would meet them there. I took Ace who I had tied outside the pasture to the barn in hopes that they would soon be there. They didnā€™t come so I went back out and got Patty just as it was starting to rain again.

To see this young mare be that aggressive towards Sassy was a surprise to me. Patty likes to be with the herd. I think she was asserting her authority when Sassy wasnā€™t feeling her normal sassy self. Iā€™ve always felt that Sassy was the lead mare in my herd. She usually doesnā€™t assert herself unless necessary and she wasnā€™t yesterday at all.
