I read a while back that you should burn sage to clear out any negative energy and blow cinnamon in your front door to bring good luck and new beginnings on the first of every month. So that’s my goal.
I was planning to smudge the house the day we moved the horses and house cat. It was the summer solstice and a time of new beginnings, so I thought it was appropriate. The cat had been in a carrier for the whole trip. He wasn’t happy about that and yowled the entire time. It’s over four hours if you’re wondering.
When I got here, I told John that the first thing we needed to do was to take the litter box and the cat in. We opened the carrier, and he came out and looked at his litter box then went back in the carrier. I guess the familiar is better than the unfamiliar. He stayed there. When we finished unloading U-haul and our vehicles I was exhausted. I sat down and was having a glass of wine. Then I realized it was almost dark and that I wanted to smudge the house. So, I dragged myself out of the chair to find the sage that my friend Michelle in Wyoming had picked for this moment.
I started at the front door and went up to the second-floor bedrooms. Then I went to the basement where I smudged everything including the big storage rooms. Then I started on the ground level, the dining room, living room, kitchen, and laundry room where the cat was still in his carrier with the door open. As I finished that room he came out of the carrier and looked around as if to say it was now okay to be here.
I’ve had a lot of clearing in my life in the last several years. In 2021 I was paired with a good friend in the Touched By A Horse® graduate coaching circle. We had many Cores together during the program and he knew me well. There was a kid who had molested me in junior high and stalked me in high school until he graduated my junior year. He set up a situation to get me to talk to him and get some of the anger he was sure I had out. I kept saying in that situation I would be a professional, stuff my feelings down, and go on.
It took several calls until he finally hit the trigger that let that anger come up. He had me write to him. I got nine small notebook pages and at the end, you couldn’t tell there were words I was writing so fast and angry.
It was a few months later that I was told that the moon cycle was in the right stage for new beginnings and the clearing of the old. My mom was selling the house where I had grown up, and I was headed to Hawaii in about a week. I decided that I needed to do a clearing ritual with those pages on the porch that was attached to what had been my bedroom. I called my son who was working at a building that mom owned and asked if there was something that would be safe to burn the pages in. There wasn’t much wind that day so I thought it would be a good time. He said there was a metal trash can. He’d empty it and take it to Mom’s where I would meet him on the porch. He and his girlfriend supported me as I burned the pages to release them.
A while later I found some letters from the boy in some stuff I had taken out of my bedroom at Mom’s house. I read them and burned them in my sink to release them.
