The Universe has decided I have more lessons to learn. Apparently, I havenāt learned enough since Mike was diagnosed with a rare auto-immune disease in January 2013. Since that time, Iāve driven 10s of 1,000s miles to hospitals and clinics in Denver, Rochester, MN, Kansas City, KS, Houston, TX, and letās not forget the ālocalā ones in Hays and Colby, KS. Weāve met numerous doctors and staff members and seen the good, the bad, and the ugly in patient care. Also during that time Iāve had a full-time job that was combined with another full-time job which I said no thank you to and I started a two-year intensive training in Equine Gestalt Coaching which Iām about to finish. What more do I need to know? In mid-November, after two mammograms, an ultrasound, and a biopsy my doctor diagnosed me with breast cancer. Itās the most common type and the tumor is small, she said when we talked about it on the phone the first time.
I was in shock! 85% chance that itās benign, we want to be sure is what I had been told before the biopsy. My first move was to email two of Mikeās doctors that I trust at KU Med Center and ask them who they would send their wife or daughter to. I got a recommendation for a surgeon at KU and when I talked with my doctor here I told her thatās who I wanted to see. They have so many more resources than here and weāve been there so many times they seem like old friends to us. Letās back up and start from the beginning and the mammograms.
