I was able to spend four days in the new house this week. The movers came to Oakley on Wednesday and loaded up the big stuff. Most were antiques and some boxes that John and I had packed. Then they were to meet us on Thursday in Oskaloosa. He thought around 11:30 am.
John had asked if we could stay a little longer so he could work some graduations at the Lied Center. Sure, we’ll stay through Saturday night.
After the movers left, we loaded up the back of my Jeep with the smaller plants that the movers hadn’t taken, our stuff, and Dalila and headed to Lawrence where we had a late dinner and I dropped John off for the night.
When I picked him up for breakfast the next morning, I thought we were going to be pushing it to get to Oskaloosa before the movers. So, I texted the movers to see when they might arrive. He got back to me and said around 1:00.
After breakfast, I went to Walmart while John took his bike to the shop to have them do a repair. By the time I was done again, I thought it would be pushing it to get home before the movers got there so I sent another text. There was no response. I started worrying – he’d been very good at communications up to this point what had happened. We got up to Oskaloosa, they still weren’t there, and still no response. I was going through scenarios that would prevent the mover from contacting me.
I had also been Facebook messaging with a friend. Coordinating her visit. I told her the movers would be there around 1:00 and he expected it to take about an hour to unload so she scheduled to get there about 2:00 or 2:30. It never occurred to me that there might be a problem with my phone.
Finally, I noticed that my text about maybe not getting there before the movers hadn’t been sent. John suggested I call them. I dialed and it was cut off immediately – it didn’t even ring. I showed John what it was doing, and he tried to call them. He got through. They were almost there. It was now about 2:30. John suggested I restart my phone and immediately I got two messages from the mover and some from my friend. She arrived about five minutes before the movers.
John worked out with the movers where they would like to park and the move-in began. As they brought stuff in, I felt like I was directing traffic, and everything felt scattered.
Friday John and I rearranged some things and unpacked others. His boss called and asked if he could work Friday evening as well, so we went to dinner in Lawrence, and I dropped him off again. Saturday morning, he had to work early, and Roderick and his girlfriend came over for breakfast and we had an adventure about some kittens. (More about that later.)
I think I’ll have the horses here before the first of June and I’m looking forward to starting my Caregivers Circle shortly after that.
