When Life Breaks Open

texture in bricks

Textures in the wall outside Mike’s hospital room at KU Med Center. This was the view I had for almost three weeks.

Over the past five weeks, I’ve shared some of the passions that sustain me — horses, caregiving, creativity, storytelling, and community. Each one has been a way of filling in the cracks that caregiving and life have carved into me.

Keeping Life “Normal” Amid the Chaos

But here’s the truth I want to leave you with: cracks will always appear. Life will keep handing us challenges, losses, and responsibilities that stretch us thin. For me, filling in the cracks was also about keeping life as normal as possible — making sure love and laughter still lived at the dinner table, still finding joy in the barn, still creating beauty through photography or writing. Those “ordinary” things were never small; they were acts of riding for the brand — staying loyal to my family, my values, and myself in the middle of hardship.

We don’t fill in the cracks once and for all. We tend to them, again and again, with the things that keep us grounded and whole.

For me, it’s the nuzzle of a horse reminding me to breathe. The courage I find in loving my family through hard days. The way a camera lens, music, or a blank page gives me a place to express what words sometimes can’t. The power of stories shared and received. And the belonging that only comes when we gather in circles and admit we need one another.

Maybe for you, the things that fill the cracks are different. Maybe it’s faith, or gardening, or music, or laughter with friends. Whatever they are, they matter. They are your lifelines.

Letting the Light In

Cloud with silver lining

Every cloud has a silver lining.

As I continue walking this path — as a caregiver, a horsewoman, a writer, and a woman learning every day how to keep going — I’ll keep tending to the cracks. And I’ll keep inviting you to do the same. Because cracks don’t mean we’re broken beyond repair. They mean we’re human.

And sometimes, the most beautiful light shines through the places we thought might break us.

The cracks don’t disappear, but we don’t have to face them by ourselves. If you’re ready to explore your own story, reconnect with yourself, or simply breathe a little easier in the presence of horses, I’d love to talk with you. Reach out, and let’s begin filling the cracks together.

And if you feel called to take the next step, consider joining one of my Equine Gestalt retreats or PlayShops. These horse-guided experiences are designed for individuals, caregivers, families, and even corporate teams — anyone ready to build resilience, connection, and community. There’s always a place for you in the circle.

Every Story Needs A Soundtrack. 3 women on horseback in a creek with musical notes in the sky.Every story needs a soundtrack.

This is the one I’ve chosen for this post—sometimes because of the title, sometimes the lyrics, sometimes simply the feeling it stirs in me.

Anthem – Leonard Cohen

My brand - CS with bar underneath.

CS Bar — my grandfather Charles Socolofsky’s brand. Today, it’s mine too. A legacy carried forward, one story at a time.

On the ranch, there’s a saying: Ride for the Brand. It means you show up with loyalty, integrity, and heart—you stay true to the one you serve. For me, writing here is a way of riding for the brand of my own life’s work: being authentic, living with courage, and sharing stories that matter.

Stories are powerful. They don’t land the same way for everyone—each reader brings their own experiences, hopes, and hurts to the words. That’s the beauty of it. My stories may carry one meaning for me, and yet spark something entirely different for you. That doesn’t make either version wrong. It means we’re connecting in the only way humans truly can—through our imperfect, varied interpretations of life.

So here, I’ll keep showing up. I’ll tell my stories—the raw, the ordinary, the joyful, the hard—and trust that you’ll find the piece that speaks to you. This is my way of riding for the brand and inviting you along for the journey.

Onward!
