Finding Strength Through Connection and Support

Lone highwaySometimes it feels like I have a lot of windshield time. Recently Iā€™ve gone to Wichita the last three Wednesdays for workshops for the Enterprise Engagement Series that Iā€™m part of. We can attend virtually and that was what I was going to do. Then after going to the first session, I could see the advantages of being there in person. Itā€™s about a two-and-a-half-hour drive so I grab a cup of coffee to drink on the way there.

A Lifetime of Long DrivesWoman graduate and family

Windshield time is nothing new to me. I grew up in western Kansas where we drive for almost everything. I drove 90 miles one way two to three times a week for three years to finish my degree at Fort Hays State University.

When I was younger, we took my mares to stud farms to have them bred and I drove many miles to go to horse shows and the races. Then my husband and I drove over 57,000 miles on his medical trek.

During the medical trek, I often felt like I was camping. Grabbing a suitcase sometimes at the last minute to take him somewhere. Then living out of it for the time we were there.

I was stressed beyond belief when he was sick. At first, I had a full-time job. Then I was a student in the Equine Gestalt Coaching MethodĀ® program. Both of which meant more driving.

The Impact of Personal Stress on Professional Life

Horses in pastureStress can get in the way of doing a job. There was a time when we were working on a big event and I would be asked at meetings if I had completed something from a prior meeting. My response was often ā€œWas I here for that?ā€

When you reach that stress level there is a need for support. As the person in that situation, I didnā€™t see the need. I thought I was doing fine. I wasnā€™t.

You can see the toll having a team member who is dealing with a high level of stress in their personal life can have on their work. Does your company have practices in place to help them?
