Lone highwayTraveling on the highway between Oakley and Oskaloosa several times Iā€™ve had plenty of time to think. Because of this I sometimes prefer to drive to events that someone else would fly to.

Sometimes in Kansas, the wind can feel like itā€™s going to blow you off the road. Iā€™ve had several trips like this. One when I was coming back to Oakley from looking at properties in eastern Kansas. That day my realtor asked if Iā€™d like to come watch her riding lesson instead of driving home in the wind. No, Iā€™d like to see if I can stay ahead of it. That wasnā€™t the case. Before Iā€™d gotten very far, I saw that I-70 was closed west of Hays (90 miles from Oakley) because of visibility. I thought Iā€™ll go as far as I can and if I must stop then I will.

Horses runningThen it started raining. Gently at first then it was a full-on downpour. Not only was the wind trying to blow me off the road now the rain was making that road slick and the visibility was horrible. Iā€™d better stop at the next exit. The rain had let up by then so I kept going.

I got as far as Russell (about 30 miles east of Hays) and the road had been closed so I pulled off and parked at a convenience store. I waited for a little over an hour when I saw the other vehicles getting back on the road and headed west a bit worried about driving in the wind in the dark. Fortunately, by the time it got dark, the wind had let up as well. I heard later that the wind had been measured at about 110 miles per hour at Russell. It was a relief to get home.

horse looking to sideThere are times when life feels full of inconvenience. Like youā€™re being blown about on the highway by the wind. How you handle these inconveniences can make or break a situation. Do you pretend itā€™s not happening and try to go on with your life? Do you get angry and resentful with whatever is inconveniencing you? Do you give yourself permission to slow down and take a closer look?

When youā€™re caregiving many things will feel like an inconvenience. How do you handle them? Venting to your girlfriends about it may feel better at the time. Do they really understand what youā€™re going through?
