The journey may be full of curves. Follow your intuition.

Iā€™ve been having technical difficulties again. Both of my external hard drives went down at the same time. About two months ago I got a message from the manufacturer that there had been some threats to the older model that was out of support.

I didnā€™t immediately take the steps that they suggested so now I was wondering what was happening since both my drives quit at the same time. Oh, these are also the drives where I store all my photos. I was beginning to panic.

I reached out to support and they responded with the suggestions for the older drive. This was not the one I was the most concerned about. I took these suggestions and made that drive into one that was connected to a computer rather than a network and it was working. I had access to all my photos and the financial information on it. Now I needed to work on the second drive.

The tech who Iā€™m sure was offshore would send me a link to a fix right before I went to bed. So, I would try it the next day. When that didnā€™t work, he sent me another link to try. When that didnā€™t work, he sent me back to the first link. Because of the timing, it took three days. I was very frustrated.

Open your heart.

Finally, I brought the drive upstairs and plugged it directly into the router instead of into the satellite. Hooray, it worked. However, I had unplugged my printer from the network to do this and that was unacceptable. And when I needed to get back to work on my financial stuff the other drive was not working.

I took my newer drive back downstairs and plugged it into the satellite and again it didnā€™t work. Hmmā€¦there must be something wrong with the satellite. So, I went to take a look at it and noticed that the ethernet cable was missing. I thought I had checked that when I was troubleshooting the drive. There was a big relief when I plugged it back in and the drive started working again. I had been playing around with tech support for at least two weeks and I hadnā€™t noticed this.

Calm after the storm

I was also frustrated by the whole situation. The back and forth with tech support to no avail and when I followed my intuition, brought the drive upstairs and plugged it in it worked. Glad to have that one working I set out to see what I could do with the older one. It seemed to me that it wasnā€™t going to work plugged directly into the computer, so I took it back downstairs and plugged it back into the network. Now itā€™s working. I have reached out to a local company that works on technical issues to see about converting it into a USB drive instead of a network drive and I will be reaching out to the manufacturerā€™s tech support to see if there is a way to protect the older drive on the network which would be my preference.

When a big storm is brewing it is best to take a calm look at things and follow our intuition. Iā€™ve learned this multiple times with tech support. Often if I follow my intuition, I will fix it.
