Creating an atmosphere of mutual respect and consideration for boundaries, can lead you to the path of personal happiness.

How Horses and Boundaries Can Transform Your Life

I was talking with another coach about boundaries about two weeks ago. I have trouble setting them. I can see that this comes from my mom, she has more trouble than I do.

The conversation started with setting boundaries around caring for my mom and my son. Then it moved on to how Ace, one of the horses I partner with, is good at helping people set boundaries.

Lessons from Ace: A Horseā€™s Unique Way of Teaching

He likes to grab onto things with his teeth and not let go. When I got him, he was always trying to get a treat from me. Because he works with people who donā€™t know a lot about horses this was unacceptable. Then he would get my shirt in his teeth. More recently it has been his halter when Iā€™m putting it on him.

Heā€™ll grab the nose band, and Iā€™ll have to put my thumb in his mouth as if Iā€™m asking him to open it to put a bit in. Sometimes he throws his head up making it even harder for me to halter him.

The day after the conversation around boundaries he didnā€™t do either of these things. The only thing that has changed is my mindset. I call it mindset magic and I havenā€™t had trouble with him since.

The Power of Mindset: Shifting Perspectives for Change

The road may be full of curves and bumps.

Mindset can be amazing. It can help with pain. This has been proven with the placebo effect. It can improve health. I feel like it was my mindset towards giving birth and illness that helped me breeze through labor and delivery, and treatment. It can improve your overall life.

Iā€™ve always had a positive mindset. See the glass as half full. I remember a kid in junior high who said that if you expect the worst out of a situation, youā€™ll usually be pleasantly surprised. I could never think like that. Not that I donā€™t worry about possible outcomes. I donā€™t dwell there.

Worry doesnā€™t do any good. It wonā€™t change the situation and it steals much of your energy. Mike used to say, ā€œif you donā€™t mind, it wonā€™t matterā€.
