Is your life driven by chaos? Do you get exhausted by overwhelm?

Several years ago, I went into my therapist’s office. It was a little over a year into Mike’s illness. When he asked how I was doing I told him I was terrified and exhausted. However, as I do, I was “handling” it.

Later, after a trip to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN I realized I was emotionally dehydrated. We had driven to Rochester in one day. I think it was about 10 hours and Mike did some of the driving. He had two days of appointments and tests. He saw a hematologist three times, I think. He was fortunate to get to see the rheumatologist before he left for a long weekend.

blue eyesMike wanted to go up to the Mall of America so on Saturday we checked out of the hotel and drove in the opposite direction of home. There we saw a brand-new Beatles exhibit of photos that had never been released and artifacts and looked around the mall. Then we started driving home. Mike had found the Strategic Air Command and Aerospace Museum in Ashland, NE, and wanted to stop there. So, we got a room on the west side of Omaha and spent the night. When we left Rochester Mike hadn’t been feeling well so he didn’t help in this two-day drive and it was rather stressful.

In the morning Mike wasn’t feeling great and I pushed him to go to the museum anyway. This made for a long visit at the museum and drive home. We got home Sunday evening and I took Monday off work. It wasn’t until Thursday that I felt I was back to being myself. It was at that point I decided I had been emotionally dehydrated. More than drained the exhaustion had choked all the emotions out of me until I had none left.

woman and two horsesThis was the first time I felt that way. There was a finality in it. It wasn’t until I enrolled in the Equine Gestalt Coaching Method® program that I learned that horses actively helped in our healing. My horses had always been my haven I didn’t realize they were taking an active role.

As caregivers, we tend to give our all and put our needs on the back burner. This can lead to exhaustion and burnout. If, for any reason, you’re feeling drained reach out for help
