Energy vampires ā€“ thatā€™s what came up in my Daily Wisdom Message today. You know the ones; they want to drain you of all your energy by spewing all their negative energy. They are the people who get themselves in a tizzy and want to vent to anyone within earshot. Sometimes it feels as if they wonā€™t be happy until everyone around them is miserable.

Iā€™m listening to Emma by Jane Austen. It has given me cause to think about society. The characters in the book are very judgmental and gossipy. I got a bit angry and I thought of not finishing the book. However, I got hooked on the plot and want to see if Emma holds to her Iā€™ll never get married declaration. Itā€™s like a soap opera set in 19th Century England.

I remember my mom telling me that an elderly woman who babysat for me told her about Peyton Place (I assume this was when the series was airing on TV). She said that you could give her any situation in it, and she could tell you when and to whom it happened in Oakley.

I donā€™t know anything about Peyton Place except it was a book and early soap opera. Oakley is a small rural town in western Kansas, and Iā€™ve always felt like everyone thought they knew about everyone elseā€™s personal lives.

When I was in high school, I was told by someone when my mom went to California to see a friend and dad went out to surprise her that she had run off and he went to drag her back. Or at a high school dance when one of the adult sponsors asked how dad was doing after his heart attack when he had gone to Wichita to shadow a cardiologist for a few days. My parents lived unconventional lives compared to the norm here and he was high profile being the only doctor in town, so people talked about them.

I also remember the distress of a woman whose husband was calving out cows and spending nights with them over the possibility of people thinking he was with another woman. I told her all that mattered was what the two of them knew to be true, not what other people thought or talked about. She had trouble with this because they owned a prominent business in town and didnā€™t want their customers to think less of them.

Basically, the people who gossip about others are energy vampires. They can only suck our energy dry if we let them. I was fortunate to have grown up with the parents I did as Iā€™ve always been pretty unaware or amused by the gossip. Not to say that there havenā€™t been times when itā€™s bothered me. Maybe that is why I felt it was easier and safer to share my secrets with the horses. The horses donā€™t gossip, they release all the negative energy back to the Universe.
